March Meeting 02/10/2010

Meet at Huron Camera in Dexter on Tuesday March 2nd, just before 6pm when they close. The folks at Huron will make the entire store available to us to peruse, including the "Wall of Used Photo Stuff" which contains mucho photo equipment that others never see. This will be a good time for anyone who has never been to Huron to check it out too. Bring your membership cards or get one at this meeting. They can save you some $ at Huron Camera while you're there. We can stay until 8:30pm if we want to.

Huron Camera
8060 Main Street
Dexter, MI 48130-1087

We have also reserved some table space at Dexter's Pub which is a few steps down the street from Huron Camera starting at 7:30pm. When we're all over at Dexter's Pub, we could have a brief business meeting and then....

Mark O'Brien will be giving a talk about using 35mm film in a 120 camera.

THE ASSIGNMENT FOR MARCH

As for an assignment, how about something simple, like, "Elegance & Grace", an assignment that reminds us that spring is just around the corner. Get those crappy cameras aimed at something nice. And if you find something that is elegant and graceful but not a flower, that's okay, too. "Elegance & Grace", your interpretation.

When: Tuesday 2nd March
Time: Just before 6pm
Where: Huron Camera,  Main Street, Dexter
Afterwards: Dexter's Pub, Main Street, Dexter

February Meeting 01/18/2010

February's meeting will be on Tuesday 2nd Feb, at 7pm, with a business meeting at 8pm. Venue to be decided.

Mike says "Shall we try for something a little exotic for a meeting place this time?" See the Flickr discussion here for more details and to contribute if you have any ideas for an interesting place to meet.

Marc Akemann has suggested a February assignment:

"February's photo assignment is "Ambiguous". We've been taught to take photos that define the subject so that there's no question as to what it is or what it represents. Well, now is your chance to be as visually vague as you like without irritating anyone. My original thought was based on a photo having more than one possible meaning, like an image of a no trespassing sign that reads "No trespassing - Enter at own risk". Whether one will enter at his/her own risk or not, the sign still says "no trespassing". So what is it? It's ambiguous. Other examples could cause you to ask, "did something just occur?", "is something happening now?" or "is something about to transpire?" There is actually a Flickr group that calls itself "Ambiguous" and you can look at the 9000+ examples they have if you need a little help. Good luck and have fun!"

A new, green-friendly photographic exhibit will feature work by local photographers at the Re-Art Gallery, located at the Recycle/Reuse Center, 2420 South Industrial Hwy., Ann Arbor.

Cheapshots II (even the name is recycled) will feature the work of members of the Ann Arbor Area Crappy Camera Club (A3C3), as they show what one can do with film cameras that are hand-me-downs, thrift shop gems, plastic wonders from Recycle Ann Arbor, and metal-bodied misfits saved from the jaws of oblivion.

It's no secret that A3C3 members have long been using film cameras while being surrounded by howling digital winds. Their mission, to keep silver-based photography alive, has become a calm island of creative anachronism, as they strive to produce meaningful imagery using what many people consider to be camera cast-offs.

Their tools represent reclaimed photographic gadgetry, and their images, housed in reclaimed frames and glass, will be viewable at the Re-Art Gallery, from January 4-31, 2010.

Show opening reception - Saturday, January 9, 2-4 pm - come and meet the photographers.

Where: Corner Brewery, Ypsilanti

November Meeting 10/20/2009

The next meeting will be held at Heidelberg Rathskeller on North Main in downtown Ann Arbor, at 7pm on Tuesday November 3rd.

Here is the first announcement for CS II, open only to participating members of the A3C3. Please Read Thoroughly.

Ann Arbor Area Crappy Camera Club - ReArt Gallery Show

Cheap Shots II -- Reuse/Reload -- January 4-31, 2010 at the ReArt Gallery at Recycle Ann Arbor, 2420 South Industrial Hwy.

Premise:
The A3C3 will be exhibiting over 2 dozen images taken by its members with cameras purchased from thrift shops, the recycle/reuse center, and saved from a landfill. Part of the A3C3's credo is the use of plastic and "crappy" cameras, though in the spirit of this show, many photographs were taken with decidedly un-crappy cameras that were purchased second-hand. The photos on exhibit will also be shown in recycled frames/glass that were obtained in the same way as the cameras.

The show will be open to A3C3 members that are active locally (i.e., no internet-only participants).

Please submit jpgs of the images you wish to submit for the show. Maximum size 800 pixels on the longest side. Send no more than 3 images to me at mfobrien@gmail.com by November 15. You will be notified by December 5, as to what images have been accepted for the exhibit.

Please indicate the type of camera used to take the photograph, and how you obtained it.

Display Requirements:
1. Image may be any size from 2.25" square to a maximum of 11x14"
2. Image may be a silver print, C-print, or ink-jet, or any alternative process such as cyanotype or polaroid.
3. Image MUST be mounted in a recycled frame - not one that you purchased new and are reusing, but a frame that was purchased used at a thrift shop, Kiwanis, RAA, or similar place.
4. Frames may be any size from 5x7" to 16x20", and they may be black, white, chrome, or natural wood color. Frame material may be wood or metal. Feel free to repaint used frames.
5. Overmat should be white or off-white, or black, and should compliment the image and frame.

Exhibitor Information:
I will need the following to accompany each image selected for exhibition --
Exhibitor name, address, phone number, web site, and email address.
Image title, final image size, frame size, display medium, camera used, and price, if for sale.

And...
There is no particular theme for the images -- I will leave it to the exhibitors to send me the usual excellent results that you obtain from the cameras. Variety is good, and this will be an excellent opportunity to show your work in a completely different venue than the usual art gallery/coffeehouse/museum setting. In the spirit of recycling and reusing, I also ask that you consider the price that you wish to sell your image for. This will be a different setting, exposing many people to photography that might never have gone to a gallery before. My rule of thumb is... what would YOU really pay? I'd like to keep the works below $75, in the $35 - $75 range. Also, I would like submission of images that have not already been shown in previous A3C3 shows.

Fees
Our only cost for the exhibit is $15. Any images sold will stay on the wall until the end of the exhibit, and a 20% commission will be given to Recycle Ann Arbor. RAA will handle the transactions.

JUDGING: Submitted jpegs will be assembled into an online gallery where A3C3 members can rate them on a scale from 1-5. Highest ranking images will get first choice for show, and so forth, until we have enough images for the space available. Obviously, I want good work from you people!

Thanks,

Mark

October Meeting 09/21/2009

October's meeting will be at Mark O'Brien's house. In Mark's words:

"Okay crappy shooters... this month we are doing Avatar Night, and will be using lighting equipment. Bring your own cameras, favorite libations, and film, and meet at my house on Tuesday October 6th at 7 pm, where we can do some of our usual meetup things, with the added feature of me setting up a studio in my garage. I'll have backdrop(s), cool lights, and flash, umbrellas, reflectors, etc. We can shoot each other, but the main purpose to to give some people the opportunity to try out shooting in this situation, with crappy cameras. The new deck should be finished by then, so people can hang out there.
Meeting at 2104 Needham Road, Ann Arbor. Please park down the street past the "no parking signs." "

September's meeting will be on Tuesday 1st at 7pm. Venue is yet to be determined, so feel free to chip in to the Flickr discussion if you have a strong opinion.

Once again, Mike will be taking a group shot with one of his crappy (or not so crappy) cameras, so comb your hair and wash your face!

August's meeting will be at the Corner Brewery in Ypsilanti, on Tuesday August 4th at 7pm.

If we get a good turn out, Mike's planning to do a group portrait!
